L'Inconnue de la Seine

L'Inconnue de la Seine, the unknown woman of the Seine, is an enigmatic death mask that has inspired artists and writers for over a century. The mask's origins are mysterious (According to an oft-repeated story, the body of the young woman was pulled out of the River Seine at Paris around the late 1880s).

The face of the unknown woman was used for the head of the first aid mannequin Resusci Anne - the CPR practice doll. For this reason, the face has been called "the most kissed face" of all time. I was intrigued by the similarity between how Resusci Anne was repeatedly copied and iterate character of printmaking. By the endless iteration of one death mask, L'Inconnue de la Seine have converted the symbol of mortality into Beauty, immortality, and most importantly - the hope of survival. I am here to pay my sincerely respect.
